I had imagined this place as a future home for my personal homepage; not necessarily a blog. In a short time, after I created an account and got the sub-domain, I’ve found out that you need to pay to change the look of your blog. The other option is to select from the multitude of fabulous but un-editable themes that are available for free. The only way to have your own custom template is to pay for it.

I understand that this is a free blog and they are giving you the storage and the amazing CMS that is WordPress. What I can’t fathom is why WordPress.com wants to limit my editing abilities to HTML when Blogger allows you to have your own template – HTML, JavaScript, CSS included – for free! Even Geocities, an arcane website by today’s standards, allows you to design your own space on the web, even though they host it. So what gives, WordPress.com?

I guess the answer is to move to some service that allows, free of charge, the things I want; and I don’t think I’m asking for a lot. Since the website is not meant to generate any revenue as such, paid hosting options are out of contention. I’ve used Blogger for a while now, so maybe there’s something there. We’ll see …
